The Best Moments Happen Around the Same Table – SocialBBQ Turns Grilling into a Shared Experience
Finns are passionate grillers—but the debate over whether charcoal or gas is better often misses the point. In the end, what matters most is not how you grill, but how you come together around it.
At the Helsinki Spring Fair in 2026, a Finnish innovation—the SocialBBQ Grill Table—will be introduced, challenging the traditional way of grilling. With a charcoal grill integrated into the center of the table, cooking and dining happen in the same place, inviting everyone to participate.
SocialBBQ’s goal is to make Finnish food culture more communal. When food is prepared together at the same table, no one is left in the kitchen or outside the conversation.
“When everyone can take part in preparing the food, the conversation stays lively and meals become longer and more relaxed. Even children want to join in when they get to turn, season, and participate. That’s when food becomes a shared experience—and at the same time, we learn how to be together,” says Teemu Saarinen, the creator of the SocialBBQ Grill Table.
It’s not about the grill—it’s about being together
The question of charcoal vs. gas divides Finns almost evenly. According to a survey conducted during a roadshow (443 respondents), 49% prefer charcoal grills and 46% prefer gas grills.
In traditional grilling, one person cooks while standing apart from the group—literally with their back turned. As a result, they often miss out on conversations and shared moments. By the time the food reaches the table, part of the atmosphere is already gone—and in the worst case, the food has cooled down.
“In the end, grilling isn’t about the grill—it’s about the moments. It’s about being together and doing things around the same table,” Saarinen says.
The SocialBBQ Grill Table changes this dynamic: cooking takes place in the center of the table, with everyone involved. This shared activity makes meals longer, more relaxed, and more meaningful.
Experience it at the Helsinki Spring Fair
During the spring, the SocialBBQ Grill Table will tour events across Finland. At the Helsinki Spring Fair (March 26–29, 2026), visitors will have the opportunity to see and experience the table in action.
SocialBBQ will also be featured in the event program on the Spring Stage. The talk, “The Best Moments Happen Around the Same Table,” explores how unforgettable experiences are created during cottage weekends and garden parties through shared activity. The presentation highlights the idea that the best moments arise when everyone gathers around the same table—including those who are often left out.
Practical tips will also be shared on how the grill table can extend the outdoor season and make efficient use of even small outdoor spaces. The talk will be given by Anna-Mari Alkio.

The grill table is ideal for yards, terraces, and summer cottages—places where people come together to spend time. The product is handcrafted in Finland and has been awarded both the Key Flag Symbol and the Design from Finland mark.
Experience has shown that the value of the product is best understood through use.
“The table needs to be seen and experienced. When people cook together at the same table, it creates a completely different atmosphere compared to traditional grilling,” Saarinen explains.
A shift is needed in Finnish food culture
In Finland, dining has traditionally been a shared moment where people linger together. Over the years, however, this culture has faded in many places—everyday meals have become faster and more fragmented.
SocialBBQ aims to help bring this culture of togetherness back. The company is currently developing a gas grill version as well as new solutions to make shared cooking and dining more accessible in different environments.
At the same time, SocialBBQ is targeting controlled international expansion, particularly in European markets. The goal is to introduce the Finnish, participatory grill table concept to cultures where shared dining remains central—and to offer a new way to gather around the same table.
Ultimately, the idea is simple: everyday life is at its best when it is shared.
