Tallinn Celebrates Winter with a Month-Long Bun Fest – Over 40 Cafés Taking Part
PRESS RELEASE 14 January 2026
Tallinn starts the year on a sweet note as the Tallinn Bun Fest returns for the second time, running from 15 January to 17 February 2026. The festival highlights Estonian pastry craftsmanship, the city’s high-quality café culture, and local Shrovetide traditions. More than 40 cafés and bakeries across the city are participating, from the airport and Old Town to the city centre and the creative districts of Northern Tallinn.
The selection ranges from classic cream-, jam- and almond-filled buns to bold and modern interpretations. The festival also caters to diverse dietary preferences, with lactose-free, gluten-free and vegan options available. In addition, several cafés offer savoury versions of the traditional bun.
Organised by Visit Tallinn, the Bun Fest is not a single-day event but a nearly month-long celebration. Throughout the festival period, Shrovetide buns and related traditions are prominently featured in cafés and across the city.
A Tasty Way to Explore the City
Participating cafés are spread throughout Tallinn, including unexpected locations such as Tallinn Airport, the TV Tower, the Botanic Garden and even a tower of the medieval city wall. Sampling buns from café to café turns into a relaxed urban adventure, encouraging visitors to explore new neighbourhoods and discover the city from fresh perspectives.
A Sweet Reason for a Winter City Break
The Bun Fest combines a traditional seasonal treat with Tallinn’s vibrant café scene, offering an appealing reason to visit the city in midwinter. Early in the year, Tallinn has a calmer and more atmospheric feel compared to peak seasons, and prices are often more favourable. The month-long duration of the festival allows visitors to enjoy the experience at an unhurried pace over several days.
