The acoustic Tyyne screen is a combination of traditional Finnish craftsmanship and circular economy innovations

Wood weaving is one of Finland’s oldest craft traditions. This durable, material-efficient technique has inspired generations of Finnish designers and artists. Guided by the principles of the circular economy, the new Tyyne space divider is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Finnish wood weaving. With an A class next-generation acoustic filling, Tyyne celebrates what Finns value most – the silence. 

Geometrically woven bark, birch in particular, was skillfully used to make Everyday objects such as shoes, baskets, backpacks, and household items. The technique is based on folding, plaiting, and interlacing narrow strips of wood into strong and seamless structures.

Historically, wood weaving techniques were taught within families and local communities, with regional variations developing across Finland. The tradition has also had a significant influence on Finnish modern design.

Tyyne is a new space divider based on circular economy principles and wood binding. As a Class A acoustic space divider, it is suitable for Hospitality and office interiors, as well as homes. Tyyne will be launched at the Habitare Furniture Fair in Helsinki in September. Tyyne is a collaborative project by interior architecture studio Sistem and circular economy expert Niimaar.

Enjoy the silence

Name Tyyne is a Finnish female name that can be translated as quiet or calm. ”When you look at the history of space dividers, from ancient Greece to Japan and China, and into modern times with Alvar Aalto’s famous Screen 100 from the 1930s, what makes them so fascinating is how they have shaped social situations, living and working culture, and the way people share space,” interior architect Daniela Weintraub from Sistem says. ”We wanted to create a new, modern space divider with high acoustic performance. Finns are known as a Nation that enjoys and values ​​silence. For us, silence is never uncomfortable—it is a luxury. Silence gives us space to Breathe and relax.”

Finland as a global pioneer in the circular economy – Tyyne is made from recycled materials

In 2016, Finland became the first country to publish a national roadmap for a circular economy, led by the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra). This roadmap helps companies and initiatives find each other and join forces to develop new types of products and services.

The binding material used in Tyyne comes from Leftover interior materials from the famous Finnish luxury sailboats Swan. ”Swans require materials that are both luxurious and durable,” partner ad circular economy expert Enni Karikoski from Niimaar says. ”It takes a bit of imagination and creativity to design with Leftover materials. With the oak strips we were given, binding felt like the most efficient and durable way to use them.”

The oak strips are handwoven into Tyyne in Salo, on Finland’s west coast, while its acoustic performance comes from Aisti Oy’s next-generation acoustic panels, made from Finnish wood fiber. A large proportion of Tyyne’s materials are recycled, and the product is entirely made in Finland. Tyyne is also available in birch, with custom-made versions available upon request.
