Helsinki Transformed into Colors Through Memories – Paula Pasanen Brings the Atmosphere of the City to the Art Section of Helsinki Book Fair
What does Helsinki feel like as a color? And what does a familiar cityscape look like when seen through memory and emotion?
Textile artist Paula Pasanen brings her Fiber Art works to the art section of Helsinki Book Fair. Her works transform Helsinki’s cityscape, atmosphere and personal memories into colors and textiles.
Pasanen’s artistic practice is rooted in synesthesia: memories, places and emotional states appear to her as colors. Through textile art, she transforms these experiences into abstract works.
Pasanen is currently working on her own Helsinki Series, in which the landscapes and atmosphere of Helsinki take on a new, abstract form. In her works, Helsinki is not only about buildings and landscapes, but also about colors, memories and different emotional states. The colors can be soft, or wild and playful.
In connection with the book fair, Helsinki also appears to Pasanen through literature. She is an enthusiastic reader of crime fiction and is currently reading Max Seeck’s The Witch Hunter, in which Helsinki takes on a wintry, mysterious and tense character. In Pasanen’s work, the same city can appear in a very different way – colorful, abstract and playful.
In addition to the Helsinki Series, Pasanen is working on a collection of abstract interior art and creates commissioned works based on clients’ wishes.
Commissioned works may be inspired, for example, by a place, memory or atmosphere that is personally meaningful to the client, which Pasanen interprets through color and textile materials.
Paula Pasanen’s textile art can be seen and purchased at the art section of Helsinki Book Fair. Her works can also be purchased directly from Pasanen’s studio in Meilahti, Helsinki.
