Sustonable runs a recycling marathon against plastic waste

Nordstock Ltd Oy has launched the ecological surface material Sustonable onto the Finnish market. The manufacturing of the product reduces the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the oceans and landfills. Sustonable’s entire life cycle is based on circular economy principles.

Sustonable is an eco-friendly interior board made from recycled PET plastic bottles and natural stone. Every square metre of material uses 100 recycled PET plastic bottles.

Sustonable’s entire life cycle is based on circular economy principles. Recycled plastic is used as a raw material, therefore preventing this waste from polluting our environment. During manufacturing, the amount of virgin raw materials is kept to a minimum.

The production process consumes only a third of the energy compared to the production of traditional materials, and most of the water used is recycled back into the process. Sustonable’s carbon footprint is up to 62% smaller than that of conventional materials. At the end of its life cycle, Sustonable can be recycled to avoid new waste.

Sustonable is a 100% recyclable and chemical-free surface material that is suitable for kitchen spaces or wall panels, for example.

Sustonable is a values-based company that believes it is still possible to save the planet and preserve the oceans for future generations. Their mission is to run a marathon against plastic waste, where every m² results in 100 fewer bottles ending up in the environment.

The impact of products on the environment and people matters

Nordstock’s other products are also well aligned with the core values of sustainability, health and safety.

”Our customers are interested in the impact materials have on both the environment and people. Nordstock’s goal is to provide our customers with interior decoration materials that promote our safe and health. Environmentally friendly products fit this value very well, as ecological materials do not emit harmful compounds,” says Riku Uotila, CEO of Nordstock.

For example, HIMACS solid surface is made from about 70% natural minerals. Through the addition of pigments and acrylic, a material is produced that is both thermoformable and durable. The colours in the Recycled Colours collection contain

approximately 16% recycled waste material and are certified by SCS, Greenguard and LEED, among others.

There is no need to replace countertops or furniture made of HIMACS during renovations, as they can be simply renewed by sanding the surfaces. The product lifespan is very long.

Fiberon Good Life decking boards are made from recycled materials, consisting of 50% recycled wood and 50% recycled plastic. During the manufacturing of the decking boards, 98.5% of waste material is reused, and almost all of the water is recycled back into the process.

Both materials are chemical-free and do not emit harmful compounds into the air, making them safe to use.
